On behalf of the Green Board of Education, Administration and Staff of Green Local Schools I wish to extend our gratitude to the Green Community for their overwhelming support of Issue 8 on May 3.

The community heard our message and responded in a loud and clear voice. If this was the first election you have voted in or you are a regular at the polls, the large turnout of supporters on May 3 shows that our community (Old Green, New Green – All Green) is committed to providing our children the best educational opportunity possible. The passage of Issue 8 has solidified the foundation of what is arguably THE best school district in the best community in the state of Ohio.

So many people and businesses put so much time and effort into this campaign that I cannot begin to thank them all. Julie McMahon, Ken Orhiel and Buddy Damm deserve special recognition for stepping up to serve as tri-chairs of our outreach network. The outreach network will continue to serve as a conduit between the schools and the community. We appreciate the efforts of Mayor Norton and the entire business community for their support and contributions. Thanks to the huge number of people who willingly gave their time to come out and canvas with us. The unparalleled turnout allowed us to get the message out to more people than ever before. Without the army of volunteers who gave unselfishly of their time and talents we would have never achieved the successful results we did on May 3.

Thank you all.

The Board and Administration pledge to continue to be fiscally responsible and relentlessly pursue ways to reduce costs and eliminate unnecessary expenditures each and everyday. Hold us accountable for each dollar we spend and together we will continue to achieve more than any of us thought possible. It is a great time to be a Bulldog.

Respectfully,
The Green Board of Education

At the May 9 meeting, the Green Local Schools Board of Education, along with Superintendent Mike Nutter, thanked the community for voting in favor of Issue No. 8 in the May 3 Special/Primary Election.

It was the district’s sixth try for new money since 2004, and the issue was approved by 64 percent of voters, according to the Summit County Board of Elections.

“We can move forward now,” said Nutter.

The 6.75-mill levy will raise $4.8 million annually for five years for operating expenses, costing property owners $204 a year for every $100,000 of property value, according to district officials.

“Isn’t it a great day to be in Green?” said Board President Bob Campbell.

“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to keep the schools Excellent With Distinction,” said board member Victor Pinheiro.

“We will continue to be diligent with your tax dollars,” added board member Lynn Wiggins.

“We said we were being transparent, and we will continue to be so,” added board member Steven Foster.

Campbell also noted that a new agreement with staff that could save the district an additional $1.3 million with new concessions in health care and supplemental cutbacks, as discussed at the board’s meeting last month, is in the works.

The three staff unions — Green Education Association (GEA), Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) and Green Local Association of Support Staff (GLASS) — as well as nonunion employees, have agreed to freeze wages for three years, the board announced at its meeting last month, but the unions need to put it to a vote to make it official, said Campbell.

He added he expects the unions to vote on the new agreement next week.

After the unions vote, the board will host a special meeting to vote on the ratified agreements, he added.

In other business, the board:

• recognized students of the month Xavier Adekunle from Green Primary School, Madison Bowser from Kleckner Elementary School, Sydney Riffle from Green Intermediate School, Alexandria Goldie from Green Middle School and Matt Hastings and Stacey Faiola from Green High School;

• accepted a donation from Jennifer and Charlie Brown of a Vantage Vanguard Augmentative Communication device valued at $7,400 for the Speech and Language Department;

• granted permission for the superintendent to begin to solicit bids for the expansion of the Green Primary School front parking lot. The expansion should help relieve congestion and improve safety, said Nutter. The project is to be paid with permanent improvement funds, money that is unrelated to the levy that passed earlier this month, he added;

• accepted the retirements of Green Primary second-grade teacher Kimberlie Humphrey, Green High School intervention specialist Louis Szilagyi and Green Primary cafeteria helper Janet Rush;

• welcomed Ed Cybak as the new head varsity football coach.

“We’re excited about the new beginning here,” said Campbell; and

• approved two overnight trips for the high school Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps to attend leadership camps in Southgate and Boettler Parks in Green from June 13-18 and Youngstown Air Reserve Station June 22-26.

The next regular Green Board of Education meeting is scheduled for June 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the city of Green’s Central Administration Building, 1755 Town Park Blvd.

.

Green Community,

It is difficult to comprehend the time, effort, energy and sheer passion that have been invested in the last two months in the Green Local Schools Issue 8 campaign. Words can not convey the vast sense of pride and gratitude GSON feels for our community at the end of this Election Day. Thank you for believing in the future of our students and demonstrating those beliefs at the polls.

There are many people to thank who have made the Issue 8 campaign a success. Let’s start with Superintendent Nutter and our Board of Education. Their thoughtful dialogue and willingness to listen to all school district stakeholders resulted in an open flow of communication as we began to look for ways keep our school system strong and preserve Green’s tradition of academic excellence. Thanks also to our partners in this community, Mayor Norton and the City of Green. Your strong support of Issue 8 played a vital role in our campaign.

GSON would also like to offer a well-deserved thank you to our levy committee tri-chairs. Their tireless efforts and countless hours of service are indicative of what great leadership looks like in action. They often get little recognition for their work, nor do they ask for it, but without them, the Issue 8 campaign would not have run as smoothly nor been as successful as it was.

The Green Schools Outreach Network has met regularly since the November levy defeat and has provided the energy to maintain solid momentum during the weeks leading up to the election. This group clearly represents the best of Green. The members of this committee, which include city leaders, school district employees, parents, students and community business leaders, validate that the best ideas and strategies are born from diverse points of view.

Furthermore, our campaign committee was able to translate the district’s urgent need for funds by branching out to community organizations, businesses, clubs, teachers, students, the news media, school events and community activities. All of these connections resulted in countless individuals who agreed to talk with their friends and neighbors about our school system and enabled positive momentum to build in support of Issue 8.

It is impossible to thank each and every one of you who worked to pass Issue 8 by name. But, of course, that is the essence of Green: many individual threads woven together to create a strong fabric for the future of our children and community.

Please accept GSON’s heartfelt gratitude for your continued support of our excellent school system. We pledge to work tirelessly with the members of our school system and community to operate our district in a fiscally responsible manner while providing the highest quality educational opportunities for Green’s children.

Thank you!

.

I challenge you to show up at the elections tomorrow and prove to the naysayers in our community that you do care, you will vote and you will support and pass our school levy!

.

Dear Green Local School Parents and Community Members,

As we sit here poised on the eve of tomorrow’s special school levy election, I would like to issue you a very important personal challenge.

As many of you already know, I am a GSON volunteer and I have made it out for every canvassing effort. I have talked to numerous adults in our community: some with kids in the schools, some that send their kids to private schools and some who do not have kids in any schools. Although much of the discussion has been positive, the individuals who have expressed negative opinions about the levy’s chances for passage have a recurring theme. They believe that the levy is going to fail because as they state it, “Parents and young adults simply do not show up to vote”. They usually wish me the best of luck in my future endeavors and wave me on to the next house.

Each time I heard this point made I always asked myself, how can that be? If you have children who are going to be impacted negatively by the levy failure and you are a registered voter that supports the levy, why would you not show up to vote? So many people say, “My vote is not going to make the difference.” Or “I had something else I had to do.” We cannot allow these thoughts to deter us from going to the polls and supporting the levy tomorrow.

We teach our children to stand up for their rights and to participate in our democratic process by taking an active part in important decisions. But yet, so many adults relinquish their own responsibilities in making our democratic process work. Your participation in tomorrow’s levy by voting is critical to all students and members of the Green community. Every vote in this election is going to count! We only lost by 627 votes in November, 2010 with a 50-55% parent turn out. That means we would have needed to convert 314 of those 627 NO votes into YES votes for the levy to have passed in November…OR we needed to get 628 additional voters who supported the levy to vote. That’s where I want to challenge you. I challenge you to show up at the elections tomorrow and prove to the naysayers in our community that you do care, you will vote and you will support and pass our school levy! Also, we need for you to make sure that friends, neighbors and family members who are also registered voters in Green who support the passage of the levy also go to the polls and vote. The May 3rd vote is now and the need is real! Please go to your polls tomorrow and do the right thing for the students and the Green community. You CAN make a difference and you DO count! And we are counting on you!

Please go to http://greenforkids.org/ for updated information on Issue 8. Contact Superintendent Nutter (nuttermike@greenlocalschools.org) or the Levy Tri-Chairs (gsonwebcontact@gmail.com) with questions concerning Issue 8.

Sincerely,
